The 9K720 Iskander (NATO code: SS-26 Stone) is a modern Russian ballistic surface-to-ground missile system. The first prototypes of the components of this system were created in the late 1980s, and the system entered the lines of the armed forces of the Russian Federation in 2007. Very often, the system is built on a wheeled chassis based on the chassis of a heavy MZKT-7930 tractor unit.

The 9K720 Iskander missile system was designed to attack permanent military and infrastructure facilities important for a potential enemy, e.g. airports, command centers or communication nodes. It was created to replace the obsolete SCUD missiles in the line and to take place of the SS-23 Spider missiles withdrawn from the line under the INF system from 1987 (another designation: Oka R-400). There is probably only one type of missile in service at the moment: Iskander-M with a range of 380 km to 550 km, armed – probably – with a conventional warhead. The manufacturer also offers an export version (Iskander-E) with a range reduced to 280 kilometers. Advanced tests are also underway on the Iskander-K missile, the range of which is estimated to be at least 500 km. The Iskander missile system, or rather the missiles from the 9K720 family it uses, is characterized by good accuracy and a very high shell velocity of up to Mach 6. At present, the operator of the Iskander system is Russia and – most likely – Armenia.
