The 1989 Yamaha TZR250 3MA is one of the most distinctive and technically interesting 250cc sport bikes of the late 1980s, representing Yamaha’s no-compromise approach to lightweight performance during Japan’s golden era of two-stroke engineering.
Unlike many of its rivals, the TZR250 3MA was powered by a 90-degree V-twin two-stroke engine, delivering sharp throttle response, a high-revving powerband, and a unique exhaust note.
This configuration set it apart from the more common parallel-twin layouts and gave the bike a strong racing pedigree inspired by Yamaha’s Grand Prix technology.
The chassis featured an advanced aluminium Deltabox-style frame, providing excellent rigidity and precise handling, while fully faired bodywork gave the TZR250 a purposeful, race-ready appearance.
One of the most eye-catching design features of the 3MA is its high-mounted twin exhaust outlets beneath the tail, a bold and unusual solution that has since made this model especially memorable among enthusiasts.
Produced primarily for the Japanese domestic market, the TZR250 3MA remains highly sought after today due to its rarity, technical ambition, and unmistakable styling.
